I posted this review over in the Hitachi MA2 variant, a old favorite among the pros. I wanted to post it here also considering it really is about the MA4. Here it’s. I have done/doing some professional woodworking and have a lifetime of experience. In air driven nailers I have Porter Cables upholstery stapler, their 23 gauge pin nailer, an 18 gauge, two of their 16 gauge nailers. I impulsively bought the Bostitch after reading the 1st page reviews,, then spent a couple of hours researching the Hitachi vs. The Bostitch. After comparing, this is what I found. Lots of people are jumping on the Bostitch band wagon because it’s the lightest at 3. 8 pounds, it’s dry as in no oil, and it has class leading 400 inch pounds of power. I was dazzled and bought now. After digging deeper, I’m refusing the Bostitch and to get the Hitachi. They both have the “lasting composite magazine” (plastic) that holds the nails. The Hitachi with its aluminum housing only weighs. 4 pounds more as in 4. 2 instead of 3. 8. That extra. 4 isn’t going to make a difference. The oil issue is apparently an advantage in that the Bostitch runs dry, however my other nailers are all oiled, and all I do is drive 2 or 3 nails into a part of scrap to blow out the extra oil when 1st put a couple of drops in the gun, and the rest of the time it’s dry. Also the 400 pounds of torque isn’t an issue because the 15 gauge nailers have tons of power as in comparison to the 16 gauge, so much so that a small difference in power is irrelevant. When I borrowed a PC 15 gauge and 1st fired it, it went off with a POW instead of a pop like the 16.
I’d rate this nailer 4. 5 stars, not 5 five stars. I have now put over 5,000 nails through the NT65MA4 into a hardwood floor. The wood is 5/16 and not tongue and groove, so it’s all face nailed. The nails I used are 1 inch Senco nails, which are shorter than the maker suggested 1 minimum length. The Hitachi jammed on these 1 inch nails only when I tried to add a strip of nails as the in use strip ran low. Since one inch nails aren’t suggested, I don’t hold those jams against the Hitachi. I quickly learned that jams may be 100 eliminated by discarding the last two or three nails,, then sliding in a new strip of 100. The Hitachi has a nice hard quality feel, excellent balance, and great ergonomics. The NT65MA4 never felt heavy, or made my hand ache. I was worried about oil mist on the bare wood floor, so I directed the exhaust directly onto the back of my hand. I never detected any spots, mist, or shininess on my skin. Speaking of air, I never inadvertently activated the air duster. Possibly forewarned is forearmed. This is a great nailer. It’s amazing how quickly 100 nails may be shot. Consistency of depth is excellent, however not quite perfect. Some are set deeper than others, however my best guess it that’s caused by variations in the density of the wood, and not the fault of the NT65MA4. I had to use a nailset on two nails out of 5,000+. Considering the cost, which is lower than most other comparable nailers (and many inferior ones are priced higher), the Hitachi NT65MA4 is an remaining value. I have only two small complaints, both about the nose cap. When using the index marks on the nose cap, the nailer steadily places the nail above the horizontal line. Second, a spare nose cap should have been included with the gun. Mine already shows wear, after less than 6,000 nails.
Believe all the good stuff you read in the reviews, and think about the source when you read the not-so-good stuff. These tools are really meant for use by experienced and experienced workers and you’ll notice that majority of the professional reviewers give this one great reviews. I am one of them. I have every size nailer from a pinner up to framing nailers. My 30-yr-old Senco finish nailer just died after its 3rd overhaul so I thought I’d attempt something new. This Hitachi is great. Light, intuitive to manage and refill, and shoots consistent depths once the correct pressure is established. My only gripe is that it’ll shoot blanks when it runs out of nails. I like nailers that won’t shoot when the magazine has run out of nails. It sucks to learn you have been shooting blanks and to have to go back on your work to see when you ran out of nails. I knocked off one star for that, however if that is not important to you, this is a greatly suggested tool. About the reviewers who complain about plastic parts, know that modern plastics used in the right places in tools serve far better than metal. Plastic is in many cases stronger, it does not bend or kink when dropped, it’s naturally slippery so works better for nail magazines, and it does not rust. I have lots of power tools with correct plastic parts and have NEVER had a problem with a plastic part failure. The newest airliners are now being constructed of plastic.
CADEX 23 Gauge Slight Headed Brad Nails, 1-3/8" x 4000 pk vs NT65-MA4
23 gauge brads are a NT65MA4 new addition to the good finishing market place, and fill the gap between the 23 gauge good wire pins and an 18 gauge brad. They offer considerably more holding power than the straight pin, however the head is still a small percentage the size of an 18 gauge brad. This is ideal in situations where greater holding power is needed than is offered by the straight pins, however still require the minimal marking in the wood being fastened.
